“Mahogany Espresso” from Brave Coffee & Tea
roaster:Brave Coffee; Waterbury Center, VT
origin: Unknown Blend
We were excited to try this espresso blend roasted in Vermont by Brave Coffee & Tea. Brave is a family-owned coffee roasting company and tea purveyor, offering freshly-roasted coffee and teas since starting in 2009. The first thing we noticed was the peanut butter notes from the coffee, typically a strong indicator of Brazilian coffee beans. The website indicated the beans were from Africa & Latin America, but we’ve since got the inside scoop, and the make-up is Brazil, Colombia, and Ethiopia.
As an espresso it was sweet, a tad lighter then we expected, with a softer body. A nice balanced body, and some notes of peanuts, hazelnut & chocolate.
Espresso Rating – 88pts
As a coffee it was nice and full, with rolling flavor. The nutty flavor characteristics seemed to show better as a pour over coffee and it’s a coffee that would appeal to most coffee drinkers. At only $13 a bag, it represents a good value.
Coffee Rating – 90pts.
Special thanks to Scott from for the coffee, visit them at https://bravecoffeeco.com/, we’ll have another coffee from Brave soon, so make sure to check back.
About our ratings – For both ratings (espresso & pour over) we’re looking at the flavor profile, along with drink-ability and balance. Reviewing the coffee as the espresso gives us extra insights into the nuanced flavors of the beans.
